In the early 1850's one of the many men who came to California to seek his fortune in the gold fields realized his real fortune would come not from minning, but from commerce. John S. Moore built a hotel that catered to the needs to the miners along the Feather river. The town that sprang up around the hotel took on his name, and became known as Mooretown.
The town retained this name until 1921, when the Hutchinson Lumber company purchased land in the area and build a huge lumber mill. To support the hundreds of workers employed at the mill, a new town was build complete with a company store and several houses. The town was called Feather Falls, and the older community of Mooretown was forgotten. The population of Feather Falls swelled until the 1960's when the mill was shut. By the 1970's the once bustling town was nearly abandoned, with only a handful of families still calling it home.
Eventually, for a number of reasons, the current owners of the land decided to close the town. The remaining families were asked to leave, and the buildings were knocked down. But for a time, this was the site of a wonderful little community. This website is dedicated to the history of the Mooretown/Feather Falls area. The goal is to keep alive the memory of these places.
